Review from EarthLight Vol. 14 No.3, Spring 2005 Tomorrow's Children A Cherokee Elder's Guide to Parenting, by Tsolagiu M.A.RuizRazo, World Edition, USA; New Tazeuwell, Tennessee; 2004, paper, 120 pages, $4.95. Reviewed by Cheryl Lander "Who we are is a mystery with clues hidden in the natural world. We are part of all that comes from the Creator — the earth, the sky, the mountains, the water, the animals, the beautiful flowers that grow in forests, the wind, the clouds, Grandmother Moon, and the darkness that slips over her during an eclipse." The basic premise of this practical and beautifully written book is that knowing ourselves and being connected to nature allows us to raise children who respect other living beings, know themselves, and become caretakers of Mother Earth. Divided into three sections, this book discusses preparing for a child, being pregnant and raising a child, and understanding the importance of teaching a child to honor the Earth. In the section about preparing for a child, the author stresses the importance of being a whole and healthy person to best nurture another life. During pregnancy, talking and singing to the child in the womb recognizes the place of safety that the womb is, the "land of the Creator" for the Cherokee. Naming the child is important: "The child's name reflects his spirit, and describes his characteristics, how he will live and the duties he will perform, or it may simply portray a beautiful aspect he possesses." The role of the parent is ensuring the child respects nature and grows up to be a caretaker of Mother, one that future generations depends on. Tomorrow's Children includes meditations and a very helpful inventory for balanced parenting. This book should be required reading for all prospective parents — it's a wonderful tool to help people consider what it means to add a child to their lives and to the world. Although written from a Cherokee viewpoit, many of the messages are universal. |
